What is Email Click-Through Rate (CTR)?

Email Click-Through Rate (CTR) is the percentage of recipients who clicked at least one link in your email, measured against everyone who received it.

It's the cleanest full-funnel email metric you have. A click means:

  • Your email reached the inbox (deliverability worked)
  • The recipient noticed the subject line (or sender name)
  • They actually read enough to encounter a link
  • They cared enough to click it

A lot has to go right in sequence to get there. That's why CTR is such a useful number; it captures the entire email funnel in one figure.

What it isn't:

  • Not a CTOR (click-to-open rate). That's clicks divided by opens, not deliveries
  • Not a conversion rate. Clicks don't equal purchases, signups, or replies
  • Not immune to bots, though it's much more resistant than open rate

A common source of confusion: HubSpot labels CTOR as "click-through rate" in its dashboard. So "industry CTR" benchmarks from HubSpot run higher than benchmarks from MailerLite or Mailchimp. Always check which formula a benchmark report is using before you compare.


CTR Formula

The math is simple:

CTR = (Unique Clicks ÷ Delivered Emails) × 100

Three important calibrations:

  1. Use unique clicks, not total clicks. If one person clicks your CTA five times, that's still one unique click. Total click count is a vanity metric.
  2. Use delivered, not sent. Bounced emails never reached anyone, so they shouldn't dilute the denominator.
  3. CTR is not CTOR. CTR measures against everyone delivered. CTOR measures only against people who opened. They answer different questions. Use both if you can; they triangulate well.

Quick comparison: 500 delivered, 300 opens, 200 clicks. Your CTR is 40%. Your CTOR is 66%. Same campaign, very different numbers.


Understanding the CTR Result

There are two ways to read your number: campaign CTR vs. automated flow CTR. These have different baselines and shouldn't be compared directly.

A few honest caveats:

  • Image-based emails get ~3x higher CTR than text-based emails (4.84% vs. 1.64%). If you're comparing benchmarks, format matters.
  • Mobile-optimized emails see 25-40% higher CTR because roughly 70% of opens happen on mobile.
  • Bot clicks are a real problem. Microsoft Defender, Proofpoint, Mimecast, and Barracuda pre-click every link in incoming emails to scan for malware. M3AAWG research found 20-80% of B2B clicks are non-human; B2C clicks are 10% or lower contamination. If your ESP filters bot clicks (Klaviyo started in late 2024), your "real" CTR may be lower than your old reports.
  • The number of links you include affects CTR. A newsletter with 12 links naturally outperforms a single-CTA promo on CTR alone. That doesn't make it better, just structurally different.

When to Calculate CTR

CTR earns its keep when used at the right cadence:

  • After every campaign send. The cleanest engagement signal you have
  • A/B testing CTAs, layouts, or content blocks. CTR isolates content effectiveness
  • Comparing campaign vs. flow performance. Separate the two, never combine
  • When MPP-inflated open rates look unreliable. CTR is the more honest read
  • For full-funnel reporting. Pair with conversion rate and revenue per email
  • Quarterly, for executive reporting. Average across the period
  • When measuring segmentation impact. Segmented sends produce 50% more clicks

Skip it (or downweight it) when:

  • Your email has zero or one link. CTR will be artificially low or volatile
  • You're sending notification-only emails. Clicks aren't the goal
  • Your sample size is under 1,000 sends. Too noisy month-to-month
  • You haven't filtered out known bot clicks. Pre- and post-filter comparisons are misleading

Result: Your CTR is 3.00%, solidly above the all-industries average of 2.09% and into the "good" range for campaign sends.

The four numbers tell a complete story. CTR is healthy. CTOR sits above the 6.81% median. Landing page conversion is solid. And the end-to-end rate (0.36%) is what you'd use for revenue forecasting.

If your CTR is low but CTOR is high, the problem is opens (deliverability or subject line). If CTR and CTOR are both low, the problem is content. If conversion rate is low while CTR is high, the problem is the landing page. CTR alone can't tell you which, but in combination, the metrics diagnose precisely.


How to Improve CTR

CTR improvements compound. Even a 0.5% lift across a year of sends translates to thousands of extra clicks, conversions, and revenue. Ranked by impact based on what actually moves the number:

1. Switch from broadcast campaigns to triggered flows

This is the single largest CTR lever available, and the one teams underuse most.

The data is stark: campaign CTR averages 1.7-2.1%. Flow CTR averages 5.58%. That's a 3.3x gap from the same audience, same content, just different timing.

Why flows outperform: they fire when the recipient just did something relevant, like abandoning a cart, browsing a product, signing up, or hitting a usage milestone. The intent is already there. The email matches a recent action.

The minimum flow set for any B2B program:

  • Welcome series (5-email sequence over 14 days)
  • Onboarding triggered by signup
  • Re-engagement for 60-day dormant subscribers
  • Behavioral triggers based on product usage or content downloads
  • Win-back at 180 days inactive

For B2C / ecommerce, add:

  • Abandoned cart (highest-CTR email type, 23%+ in some studies)
  • Browse abandonment
  • Post-purchase nurture
  • Back-in-stock alerts
  • Review request

2. Segment beyond "engaged vs. dormant"

Segmented campaigns produce roughly 50% more clicks than unsegmented ones. The lift comes from relevance. The same email sent to a relevant segment outperforms the same email sent to "everyone."

Segmentation that actually moves CTR:

  • Behavioral. What they've clicked, viewed, or purchased
  • Lifecycle stage. New, active, churn-risk, dormant
  • Engagement tier. High engagers get more, low engagers get less
  • Geographic. For send-time and offer relevance
  • Industry / role (B2B). Content tuned to job function

A 5-segment send strategy beats a 1-blast strategy on CTR every time.

3. Use image-rich, mobile-first design

Image-based emails get roughly 3x the CTR of text-based emails (4.84% vs. 1.64%). For most consumer and visual industries, this is the easiest single CTR lift.

Caveats:

  • Images don't load by default in many clients, so always include alt text
  • Image-only emails can trigger spam filters, so balance with text
  • B2B content emails (newsletters, thought leadership) often perform better as text; test for your audience

Mobile optimization isn't optional. Roughly 70% of emails are opened on mobile. Mobile-optimized templates see 25-40% higher CTR than desktop-only designs.

What to test:

  • Single-column layouts
  • Large tap targets for CTA buttons (44×44px minimum)
  • Body copy under 80 words per section
  • Headlines that work without subhead context

4. Make one CTA the only CTA

Multiple competing CTAs in one email split attention and reduce overall CTR. The exception is long-form newsletters with multiple content blocks, each with its own link.

For promotional, announcement, and triggered emails, use one primary CTA repeated 2-3 times throughout the email (header, mid, footer), all pointing to the same destination.

What works:

  • Button-style CTAs outperform text links (3-5x)
  • Action-verb CTAs ("Get the report") outperform generic ones ("Click here")
  • First-person CTAs ("Start my trial") outperform second-person ("Start your trial") in some tests
  • Above-the-fold CTAs see 20-40% higher click rates than buried ones

5. Personalize on behavior, not just first name

Generic personalization (first name, company name) doesn't do much anymore. Recipients have seen too many of them. What does move CTR:

  • Behavior-based personalization: ~39% CTR lift when using purchase or browsing history
  • AI-driven content personalization: ~13% CTR lift
  • Dynamic content blocks: show different products, articles, or offers based on segment
  • Recency-based recommendations: "Since you read X, you might like Y"

The implementation work is heavier than basic personalization tokens, but the CTR difference is substantial.

6. Verify your list before sending

Bots, dead addresses, and security scanners distort CTR in both directions. The cleaner the list, the more honest the number.

What clean lists do for CTR:

  • Real humans actually click (bot scanners inflate but skew distributions)
  • Lower bounce rates protect deliverability, which means better inbox placement and more real clicks
  • Engaged segments stay engaged longer, so the list age curve flattens

Run new contacts through email verification, enrich them to confirm identity and role, and run quarterly list cleanings to remove subscribers who haven't engaged in 180+ days.

Smaller tactical fixes:

  • Front-load the most important link in the email body
  • Include the unsubscribe link clearly (counterintuitively lowers spam complaints, protects deliverability)
  • A/B test subject lines and preview text in parallel
  • Send Tuesday-Thursday morning local time
  • Keep subject lines under 50 characters for mobile preview
  • Avoid sending to subscribers who haven't opened in 90+ days without re-engagement

The diagnostic combinations that matter most:

  • High open + low CTR. Subject line works, content doesn't. Rewrite the body, keep the subject.
  • Low open + low CTR. Deliverability or list-quality problem. Fix inbox placement first.
  • High CTR + low conversion. Email works, landing page doesn't. Fix the destination.

The last two patterns are why CTR matters so much in 2026. MPP can make open rates look stable when underlying engagement is shifting. CTR catches the change first.

If your campaign CTR is 2% and your flow CTR is 2%, you have a problem. Flows should be 2-4x higher. If they're not, your trigger conditions are too loose or your behavioral data is bad.

Why the spread is so wide

A few patterns to notice:

  • Legal, manufacturing, and media post high CTRs because their emails contain something to act on: quotes, compliance updates, articles, spec sheets. There's a reason to click.
  • Beauty and ecommerce post lower CTRs because emails are visual and browse-oriented. People window-shop inside the email without ever clicking through.
  • Industries with content-heavy emails (media, education) outperform because more links create more click opportunities, not necessarily because they're better at email
  • B2B beats B2C on CTR despite lower opens because lists are smaller, more targeted, and recipients use email as a work tool

What's "good" for you

Don't anchor on the global average. The benchmarks that matter:

  1. Separate campaign CTR from flow CTR. Don't combine them. Campaign average is ~2%. Flow average is ~5.5%. Mixing them tells you nothing.
  2. Compare to your industry, not the global mean. A 2% CTR in legal is underperformance. The same 2% in beauty is above average.
  3. Watch your own trendline. Is this quarter better than last? That signal is real.
  4. Pair with conversion rate. A high CTR with low conversion means the email is working but the landing page isn't. The fix isn't another A/B test on the subject line.
